Holding the title of 2016, the Hawaiian John John Florence is well set to rise to the top of the rankings for this year and thus to win the title second time. The day was also marked by the presence of sharks near Kolohe Andino and the Brazilian Filipe Toledo, which is reminiscent of the attack against Mick Fanning at Jeffreys Bay two years ago. A water patrol was deployed before the competition could take its course. Fortunately, no surfer was attacked.
