Bio

Surfer Jake Marshall dominated the NSAA Junior Surf Tour for years, and now he's a pro he's got his eyes set on emulating Kelly Slater in the World Surf League one day in the future.

Marshall was born in the surfing mecca of Encinitas, California. When he was five, his family moved to Florida, which is where, at age six, he first tried surfing alongside his dad. "My dad thought it might be fun for me to try it," Marshall says. "That very first day, I loved it instantly. I started to go surfing almost every day after that."

When he was eight, Marshall's family moved back to Encinitas, to a house just five minutes from the beach. His local surf spot now is the well-known Seaside Reef break. Back in California, he started entering local surf contests and placing near the top of the heap. He then advanced to bigger contests within the NSAA series, and in time, started qualifying for finals and besting many in his age group.

His two younger brothers, Nick and Connor, learned to surf a few years after Jake. Now the entire Marshall crew surf together, and all three of them are competitive surfers.

A natural athlete, Marshall played soccer and baseball until he was 10, when his surfing schedule forced him to make a choice. "It was just getting to be too much," he says. "I knew I needed to focus on one thing. It was an easy choice to pick surfing."

Starting at age 12, Marshall's competitive instincts kicked into overdrive. He earned podium finishes at the NSAA National Championships in his age group for three years running, including in 2011, when he earned double national titles in two categories and the most inspirational performance award, cementing his status as a grom to watch.

In 2013, at age 14, he travelled to Hossegor, France, for the invite-only King of the Groms contest. It was his biggest contest yet, with an international field of talented juniors. His goal was just to qualify for the finals.

"I ended up making the finals and then I was like, 'Now I've got to win this thing,'" he says. He started winning heats and he rode the momentum all the way to the top, securing the win with a solid backhand double hit combo. "Winning that definitely boosted my confidence," Marshall says.

He admits that when the pressure is on is when he performs the best. "I like the competitive side of it the most," he says. "When you get that pressure, you've got to rise to the occasion, that's my favourite thing about surf contests."

He's been working on some film projects as well, shot in locations around the world. "Filming's a different kind of pressure. In contests, it's just cut and dried – you got first, you got second. In filming, you go off your own standards, and it's the pressure you're putting on yourself to surf your best.

"But I just love being in the ocean," he adds. "It's a cool feeling to ride a wave that's come from really far away."
