Nerves had the upper hand in the early hours of this morning, as competitors approached the start line afloat a barge for the first stunning day of New Zealand’s new multisport race that is Red Bull Defiance. Competitors prepared to tackle seven individual punishing stages over two days, negotiating a total distance of 153.25km and elevation of 4418m. Fresh southerly winds and low temperatures challenged the first stage of the race. Braden Currie and Dougal Allan lead the pack for the duration of the day, tackling a 43km bike ride, 7.5km run, Peugeot abseil, and a 2km kayak followed by a 15km run to the finish line in Wanaka Township. Currie and Allan took out the day one title traversing 77.5km in five hours and 56 minutes, 17 minutes ahead of Jarad Kohlar and Alex Hunt from Team Peak Adventure.
